"Nana-Gigi's Here, Nana-Gigi's Here!!!!"

... were the only six words I remember hearing before my overly excited 5 year old Tanner set off the airport security system. He was so excited to see Nana (my Dad's Mom and therefore HIS Great-grandmother) that he ran right through the security line, past the guards where he set off the noisy alarms and red flashing lights. He almost made it to the door where he saw her in the courtesy wheelchair, almost. He was immediately instructed to quickly turn around and wait BEHIND the yellow line.

After all that ruckus and commotion he certainly deserved the FIRST hug from Nana!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

My Nana is an amazing woman! Everybody that meets her LOVES her! In fact my best friend Tobey (who is always Nana's date to weddings and family functions) asks me at least six times a year if she could adopt Nana as her own grandma.

Nana was born in New York City, February 1920. That makes her almost 91! She's sharp as a tack and tells some of the best stories. She's also quite the trooper for making the trip to Tulsa each and every year. We were so blessed that she arranged her trip to fall when we were visiting from Bahrain because otherwise I would have to go two whole years without seeing her. And THAT just would NOT do!

The last time Nana saw Gavin was at his Christening. At the time he was 9 months old and now he's nearly two!

I love this next series of photographs, it features three of my favorite people. Dad, Gavin and Nana. My Daddy was cracking jokes AND trying to get Gavin to sit still (yeah, right! Good luck with that!). Gavin was being a stinker. A complete "wiggle-worm" laughing and playing on my Dad's lap. Nana was so cute watching the silliness unfold. Pay attention to the look on her face as the series of photos unwind...

Do you see it?

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! Isn't she beautiful? The last photo displays the sheer essence of Nana. The pure joy of being a Mom, a Grandma and a Gigi (Great-Grandma)... that's her, my sweet-sweet Nana (and one of my best friends).

Nana, thank you for making the special effort to spend this precious time with us. See you next December, I love you! XOXO

Roaming River Parks!

One of my favorite places in Tulsa, OK is the beautiful stretch of land that runs alongside the Arkansas River. The city in all it's wisdom has preserved and put a lot of time, money, energy and pride into developing a superior park that stretches for miles and miles. River Parks features well manicured gardens, many playgrounds all outfitted with state of the art play equipment and two trails that run far beyond the length of the park (one for pedestrians and one for bikes/skateboards). While visiting Tulsa the boys enjoyed several trips to River Parks... this was our first trip.

Playing with Grandpa, Nini, Aunt Megan, cousins Ella & Eva and Tessa The Dog.

Sweet Gavin liked to go "under the bridge"

Ella working the shades and cheerleading uniform! :)

Tanner on his FAVORITE piece of equipment at the park. Round and round and round he goes!

Ella checking out the water feature.

Precious cousins: Gavin and Ella exploring one of the water features.

Megan and little Eva

Weeeee.... Mommy and Gavin enjoying the slide!

Playing is HARD WORK!

Gavin and his proud Grandpa.

My sweet and curious baby, I must admit the part I enjoyed the most was the way he seemed to study his new surroundings. All the sensations he was experiencing for the first time (in his memory anyway) must have been overwhelming: A need for long sleeves, chilly breezes, fall leaves, cold water in the fountains, grass, and that white light the sun casts on a crisp Oklahoma Fall morning. All of it so unique to Gavin and beautiful for his Mommy to see him observe.

Great action shot: Ella and Tanner racing down the slide!

Nini, Tessa The Dog and Gavin playing on the green turf "hills".

A beautiful game day morning spent outdoors with family - PRICELESS!

Wonderful Winslows!

Our first full day in Oklahoma we were blessed to be surrounded by the love of our family!

My sister Megan drove from Norman, OK to visit for the weekend! She brought her BEAUTIFUL girls Ella (age 2) and Eva (3 months).

I was so excited because this was the first time I met precious Eva in person! She has the prettiest eyes I have ever seen and an adorable grin to match! She is by definition: YUMMY!

Ella is now so big, I can't believe it's been almost a year since hugging her and my how she's grown! Obviously she's ADORABLE as you can see from the pictures and "Smarter Than A Fifth Grader"! (LAUGH) At two, she reads and has an amazing vocabulary - OH! and you should hear her voice... it's so cute it makes me laugh! (I can hear it in my head now, "Ella loves Ella's Elmo!") Awww... :)

My little sister Megan is an amazing Mom! I hope someday I can grow up to be just like her! :) Love you Megs!

Meeting Lizzie!

My sister Lauren and her husband Todd had their first child three weeks prior to our arrival in Oklahoma. I just couldn't wait to get my hands on that little Elizabeth Anne Jeffrey!

On our first full day in Oklahoma we made our way north to Owasso to meet the tiny little princess and congratulate her parents in person! It goes without saying, Lizzie is GORGEOUS! A tiny little girl with beautiful blue eyes, a full head of dark locks and a sweet disposition who I just didn't want to put down!

I was proud to deliver a few handmade gifts for my sweet new niece. I made a black, white and lime green quilt to match her nursery and a little "lovie" blanket for her to snuggle when she gets a little older. I was shocked to see how well the quilt went with her other bedding. I had not seen the bedding prior to that moment and could not believe the size of the stripes in the quilt matched those of her bumper! Fate!

I enjoyed holding, feeding and loving on my newest little niece!

I love her, I think they should keep her! (LAUGH!)

Barbecue, Sleep and Sonic - OH MY!

After the flight we had I didn't know what I wanted first: Sleep, beer or BBQ. "How about all 3!" suggests my Dad. Brilliant idea!

We went and checked in at the DFW Springhill Suites by Marriott and took a short nap. An hour later I was eating wonderful BBQ and sipping a cold beer. It's funny how good things can get in two hour's time, right? Had I not JUST been on a flight with "EVIL"? (See earlier blog post if this doesn't make sense).

That evening we wanted to go swimming at the indoor pool and when we arrived at the pool we saw that the whole room was flooded with 2 inches of standing water. The spa was overflowing and the floor was covered in warm water. The boys LOVED it! Nina alerted the front dest while we went for a "swim" on the sidewalk. What fun! After about an hour it was baths and bedtime.

The next morning the boys ate breakfast in the hotel lobby in their jammies and then ran around the carpeted hall in front of our rooms as if on parade. Shortly thereafter we were on our way for the 5 hour journey to the GREAT state of Oklahoma!

Along the way lunch time arrived and we all cheered for Sonic! WOO-HOO, Strawberry Limeade slushies here we come!

After a quick run-a-round it was back in the car and up to Tulsa.

The trip from Hell!

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

My mind's autobiography will forever title THAT day "THE LONGEST DAY OF MY LIFE". I learned many things that day, most of which I will share with you now... others are too painful to relive.

Let us begin at the beginning shall we?

Our flight from Bahrain to London-Heathrow was to depart at 1:20 AM, such a lovely time of day to begin the "journey of a lifetime". It was an international flight and I (the FOOLISH-FOOLISH woman that I am) would be traveling solo with my adorable children. We arrived at the airport to allow for the inevitable delays that come with child-travel. A simple reminder: at the time of the trip Tanner was 5 and a half and Gavin was 20 months (do you see where this story is headed?)

We get to the airport say good-bye to Daddy whom we already look forward to seeing in America 2 weeks later then off to the ticket counter. My very sleepy and now cranky boys make it through security without incident but I am already seeing how difficult traveling with my hands full will be - Thank God for my stroller.

THE STROLLER: "Let me count thy ways"... In my humble opinion is one of the greatest inventions that came out of the 1900's. It is easily pushed, can haul the baby's diaper bag, Mommy's purse (as well as the much needed cup of coffee at now 11:30PM) not to mention the child that it was designed to transport. That night it was also helping me lug the 20 pound car seat (another wonderful tool when traveling).

Sooooo, imagine my shock and total dismay when the British Airways agent with her beautiful carefree smile informs me that I won't be able to take my stroller with me. IMAGINE THE SHOCK!!!! WHAT WAS I GOING TO DO?!?!?! I NEED THIS STROLLER LADY!!!! OK, deep breaths, I MUST have misunderstood, RIGHT?!?!?! Nope. She said that all strollers must be checked to the final destination, no room on the plane. There were only 20 who boarded the plane that night (I mean morning). It could have had it's own seat, it's own row for that matter! That my friends is how the LOOOOOONGEST day of my life begins. She took my beloved security blanket of a travel companion and I was crestfallen, seriously crestfallen.

So there I was carrying my purse, backpack, diaper bag, 20 pound car seat AND a 30 pound "baby" while directing a crying 5 year old who was proclaiming how unfair it was that he had to walk AND cary his own backpack. GOOD LORD, really? Somehow I manage to get all this crap and myself on the plane without a single agent or "attendant" to assist me in any way. Lovely. That's customer service in 2010 for you!

We get to our seats and I notice how incredibly warm it was on board, then I notice how warm is just a joke - IT WAS HOT! When Paul dropped us off at the airport the thermometer read 103 degrees so I can only begin to imagine what the temp was on the plane. We sat out on the tarmac for over an hour without AC. I had two crying kids on my hands, it's now 2AM and I start crying myself. It's only when I become a blubbering mess that the flight attendant notices me and asks if there is "anything" she can to make this trip easier for me? EASIER?!?! EASIER?!?! So I unload on her about how it's incredibly stifling on board, my kids are beyond hysterical, I'm exhausted, it's the middle of the night AND THEY TOOK MY STROLLER!!! When will this plane take off already?

Eventually the plane leaves an hour later and the boys settle down, Gavin and Tanner restlessly "sleep" for about two hours off and on and we arrive at Heathrow at 6:30AM... let the games begin.

I (again without the assistance of the airline "staff") carry all the earlier listed items down the stairs from the plane to the waiting bus. We ride about 5 minutes to a terminal where out of nowhere a woman appears (who I will tell you now is one of two angels God sends that day to help me make it through this crazy experience). She informs me that her name is Basma and that she is "here to help you along" on my "journey". OK, strange, but who am I to argue with an angel?

To this day I'm not sure she really existed, maybe just a figment of my imagination - we will never know. Basma and I begin to chat and she said she was "supposed to help" me with the car-seat. Awesome, I now weigh 20 pounds less (WOO-HOO!!!) She was not on my flight nor was she going to my next flight. She had "another stop" later in the day. She said she was from Saudi and that she planned on visiting a daughter in Denver, CO. This kind woman made two buss transfers, walked over 2 miles of airport with me and the boys (hauling the car-seat) and sat with us for 4 hours in the terminal. She wouldn't let me buy her breakfast or lunch. I did however get her to agree to a cup of joe. Then all four of us got on another tram to make it to my gate where she waited in line with me through security and wished me a pleasant flight.

NOW, here's where it get even stranger... insert second apparition from God. A beautiful young American approaches me after I get through security and said she "needed to carry" my car-seat. "Needed", really? This is two times now. She grabbed the car-seat and we walked in. I thanked her and then I said that we would need to look for seats in the waiting area, she said "no, need. My Mom and I have saved two seats for you, the baby can sit on your lap." I looked around and realized she had been here for quite some time because the place was PACKED and I also noticed that there was NO WAY she could have seen me approach security because the windows to security were blacked out. How had she known I was coming? She couldn't see through the windowed wall. Again, an angel. Later I learned that she and her Mom had visited her brother for his birthday in London and that she has 8 kids at home. 8 kids, she looked my age! And get this, her youngest son is named - yup, you guessed it, Gavin. She carried my car-seat to our assigned seating and buckled it in then disappeared.

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, this trip doesn't sound so bad: two angels from God, not too shabby. You're right, but this is where the trip turns around. Just as I get my confidence back, in walks EVIL.

That day, EVIL was dressed in a tacky polyester tan pantsuit and running shoes. She was in her late 60's and was in no way going to let me "enjoy" the flight. Not on HER watch, no way Jose!

EVIL announced at a rather loud volume "OH GREAT! YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! I HAVE TO SIT NEXT TO A KID ON THIS 12+ HOUR FLIGHT!!! THIS IS NOT HAPPENING TO ME!" to which I screamed in my head "OH GREAT! YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING MEI HAVE TO SIT NEXT TO THIS HAG FOR THE NEXT 12+ HOURS?!?!?! THIS IS NOT HAPPENING TO ME!" I could go on for days about all the unpleasantries she bestowed upon me in those never-ending 12 hours but I will spare you the nasty details. Looking back now I think the "funniest" things she said to Gavin were:
"I'm not interested in any of your baby PARAPHERNALIA" when he offered her his pacifier. And when he kicked her husband's seat (who was sitting right in front of Gavin) she shouted "NO BABY, NO!!!! DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORD NO?!?!? YOU BETTER LEARN THAT WORD, DO YOU HEAR ME?!?!" Sweet, what a beautiful lady she was. Remind me to send her a Christmas card this year.

Finally the flight landed around 2:30PM Texas time at Dallas, DFW (10:00PM Bahrain time - 24 hours since our journey half way across the world began). The sweet lady with the son also named Gavin helped me carry the car seat out of the plane, on a tram, across the airport, through customs and to the International Exits door. Just as the earlier encountered angel, she simply disappeared after I thanked her and gave her a big hug.

After the hug I gathered up all our belongings to face the double doors that automatically opened and let blindingly amazing American sunlight stream in. It was like the reward for surviving the hellatious trip... and at the end of those beams of light stood two of the most breathtakingly beautiful faces I have ever seen.

The faces of my parents. It was all worth it. ALL of it.

Jet Lag Sucks!

It's now a week and a half post-trip and our family is almost back to "normal" or as normal as we get around here at Casa Flusche. For one week straight Gavin woke up as if his poor little body was set to a pesky alarm clock. AND that pesky alarm clock's preferred time of going off was 12:30AM. Gavin would then play hard until 4:30AM where he would pass out mid-stride (as if running into a wall). Of course this means Mommy had the "pleasure" of playing hard from 12:30AM-4:30AM as well. LUCKY me! Then he refused to nap the rest of the day, AAAAAHHHH! We looked like the walking dead around here until just a few days ago. I can only describe this brand of jet-lag as the worst hang over you have ever had AND then add the idea of a very loud and untalented garage band moving into your living room. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up in a nutshell! Fun, fun, fun!

We arrived at DFW in Dallas, TX on Wednesday, October 27th at 11:00AM and arrived in Bahrain at 8:00PM Thursday, the 28th... Yes, you read that correctly 25 hours of travel time. Keep in mind, we did this with an almost 6 year old and our 21 month old "baby".

I must admit as stressful as the trip back home to Bahrain was it was a thousand times better than the trip to Tulsa... but that story is a whole other blog in itself. I don't want to short change you - just ask those who have heard the story, they would agree it deserves it's own page! (LAUGH!)

Seeing family made this whole wild experience worth it! We GREATLY thank our parents, family (including two new baby nieces) and friends for making special time for us. Many loved ones traveled a great distance to share our trip (thank you Nana, Winslows and Sarah). We truly are SO BLESSED!

More to come about the trip, check back soon!
